ubitx:unboxing

Unboxing and first thoughts

I received my uBitx about 3 weeks after the payment, with standard package postage to avoid customs.

The components are in a plastic box and well protected :

The main board is clean and with understandable components :

The Raduino + 16×02 screen :

The Arduino Nano is a clone (CH340 driver instead of FTDI). Hope it will be fine to flash. Otherwise, I've some nano at home I'll be able to use if I encounter some problems (I remember lot of problem with CH340 drivers and Windows 10).

Fixing the loose screen

The LCD screen is only attached to the Raduino board by the 16 pins header. The problem is that it's not very resistant and there is a lot of play beetween the screen and the Raduino.

In a QRA installation, with no planified moves of the uBitx, it could be fine. But my idea is to have a rig to get on the move with, so I don't think it's a good idea to rely on the standard mounting.

So, I've designed a very simple part to be 3D printed twice, that will act like a spacer to screw the screen to the Raduino by 4x M3 screws.

Here is the picture of the fixed screen mounting system :

The STL file could be found on the Dropbox folder of the project. It's printed with PLA and I've used 4x M3x08mm screws with 2 spacers to reduce the thread length (6mm long could have been better but I didn't have this size).

Just with this change, the screen is well fixed and with the panel screws it will be very resistant and shockproof.
